Trenggalek — The quick response of the crew of SLM Josephine once again demonstrated their commitment to safety at sea, successfully rescuing a fisherman who had been drifting for approximately four hours in the southern waters of Bali.
The incident began when SLM Josephine, which was en route from Berau to Cilacap, received a distress signal (mayday) on Sunday evening. In response, the crew immediately conducted checks and initiated a search in the surrounding area.
The victim was later found at coordinates 08°53’96” S and 115°05’47” E, in the waters south of Tanjung Mebulu, Bali. At the time of discovery, he was alive but exhausted, floating while holding onto a jerry can—the only remaining part of his boat, which had capsized due to high waves.
The victim was identified as Imam Junaedi (46), a fisherman from Palangang Village, Jangkar District, Situbondo Regency. He is believed to have been drifting for approximately four hours after his traditional outrigger boat (jukung) overturned due to strong waves.
The crew of SLM Josephine promptly carried out the evacuation and successfully brought the victim onboard. The vessel then coordinated intensively with Basarnas Trenggalek and relevant authorities to ensure prompt and proper follow-up handling.
Based on the coordination, Prigi Port was selected as the nearest docking point with adequate facilities for handling the victim. He was subsequently evacuated ashore and received medical examination at Watulimo Community Health Center.
This rescue operation highlights the importance of rapid response to distress signals at sea, as well as strong collaboration between the ship’s crew and relevant authorities in critical situations.
The incident has also received wide attention and has been covered by various national and regional media, including Detik and BeritaSatu.
