JAKARTA – Sinarmas LDA Maritime (SLM) is an integrated logistics service provider and a shipping company that offers bulk cargo transportation services and port services throughout Indonesia. In addition to focusing on business in the shipping logistic sector, Sinarmas LDA Maritime has proved its involvement in terms of environmental conservation through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

One of the environmental conservation efforts can be realized by planting mangroves where Indonesia has great potential viewed from the total area of mangrove forests. Based on data from One Map Mangrove Indonesia as per September 2022, the area extent of mangrove forests owned by Indonesia reaches 3.3 million hectares or equivalent to 20% of the total area of mangrove forests in the world.

In order to commemorate the Youth Pledge Day which falls on October 28 every year, Sinarmas LDA Maritime organized a CSR activity of planting mangroves on Saturday (29/10/2022). This activity was carried out in the PIK Mangrove Ecotourism Area, Jakarta, and collaborated with the Jakarta Mangrove Community (Komunitas Mangrove Jakarta) in organizing this activity.

Sinarmas LDA Maritime and the Jakarta Mangrove Community are to conduct an initiative of preserving the mangrove ecosystem by involving staffs in planting 100 mangrove seedlings of Rhizopora sp. This activity, which was carried a day after the Youth Pledge celebration, is expected to be able to give benefits, particularly in terms of minimizing the impact of climate change in the world.

This planting activity began with welcome remarks by the CEO of Sinarmas LDA Maritime, Matthieu Lavoine and the Founder of the Jakarta Mangrove Community, Paundra Hanutama. Participants from Sinarmas LDA Maritime was also given with knowledge about the mangrove ecosystem, the benefits of and how to plant mangroves before actually planting the mangroves together with the Jakarta Mangrove Community team.

Sinarmas LDA Maritime CEO Matthieu Lavoine expressed his support to this mangrove planting activity. The existence of mangroves is very essential as a producer of oxygen (O2), absorber of carbon dioxide (CO2) and prevention of abrasion. This is the reason for the importance of preserving the mangroves for the environmental conservation.

“Through this collaboration between Sinarmas LDA Maritime and the Jakarta Mangrove Community, we hope to be able to make a real contribution to the environmental preservation through planting the mangroves. We hope this activity can inspire young people in the environmental preservation activities because the steps we are taking now will give benefits to our next generation in the future,” explained Matthieu.

On the other hand, the Jakarta Mangrove Community Founder, Paundra Hanutama, stated, “This joint planting with the Sinarmas LDA Maritime team has run well. Of course, as the Founder of this community, I hope that there will be more companies that care about the mangrove ecosystem by planting the mangroves in the future. Let’s save our mangrove forests through small thing that has a big impact, namely by refraining from disposing garbage improperly and by being wise in using plastics.”
